Does the VLCS Independent Study Program provide special education services?
Yes. Students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) may participate in Independent Study if their IEP team determines that the program can provide a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
Special education services and supports must be tailored to the student's individual needs and clearly documented in the IEP. The IEP team will determine how services, accommodations, and goals will be addressed in the Independent Study setting.
A student's need for adult support, related services, or structured instruction does not automatically exclude them from participating in Independent Study. Families who are interested in this option should request an IEP meeting to discuss whether Independent Study is an appropriate placement for their child and how services can be implemented in that setting
